Background

Demographics

The number of Asian-Pacific-Americans has grown significantly since changes in immigration law in the 1950s and 1960s. Asian-Pacific-Americans come from more than 20 countries, with most coming from China, the Philippines, India, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, and Hawaii.

Hate Crimes and Discrimination

We do not have official data yet for 2020 or 2021. Historical data from 1996 to 2019 indicates that anti-Asian hate crimes were uncommon, especially when compared to hate crimes against other groups.

Immigration Restrictions

For much of the 20th century, Asian immigrants were banned from the United States. See here if you would have been allowed into the United States a generation or two ago.
